We are looking for one to two highly motivated and dynamic researchers for a 3-year postdoc to commerce on October 1st, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary research group in Complexity and Big Data Epidemiology, which utilizes the opportunities nested within large and complex national and international datasets, including nationwide registers.
Our research
We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in an international and interdisciplinary research environment. Health is a complex phenomenon and we study the social and biological factors determining health and disease. We also aim to elucidate the underlying behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms that might explain these effects. To embrace complexity in health, we actively explore new sources (e.g. smartphones) of ‘big data’, incorporate system theory thinking, leverage insights across disciplines, and explore the opportunities in citizen science with a direct societal engagement and impact.
Your job
The postdoctoral position entails applying complexity science to complex health problems. The postdoc will actively participate in one or more extensive epidemiological research projects with our group. One of these projects is a comprehensive registry-based study focusing on health trajectories, childhood adversities, and labor market marginalization, specifically examining the transition from childhood to early adulthood. This study also encompasses intergenerational health effects and later life health outcomes, utilizing data from the globally unique DANLIFE cohort, which includes comprehensive health, social, and environmental phenotyping of over 2 million individuals from birth to adulthood.
Another project involves conducting multi-level analyses on the interactions between chronic diseases and labor market attachment using longitudinal data from the Well-being in Hospital Employee Study. Additionally, there are projects centered around sleep and health based on the SmartSleep study, which combines extensive repeated survey data, high-resolution sensor-driven smartphone data, and thorough clinical examinations. These projects aim to integrate cutting-edge methods from precision medicine and complexity science to explore the complex interplay among social, environmental, and health factors. By utilizing these methods, we can investigate dynamic interactions among various dimensions simultaneously.
The postdoc will contribute to one or more of these projects and will be responsible for scientific research related to health complexity, statistical analyses of large and intricate datasets, scientific paper writing, teaching, and outreach activities.
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
- You have a PhD-degree in epidemiology, data science, complexity science, computational science, medicine, social science, or related sciences.
- You have some experience with complexity systems science.
- You are experienced in working with large and complex dataset, preferable also register-based studies.
- You have an active interest in public health and epidemiology.
- You have proficient communication skills and a proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
- You have excellent English skills, written and spoken.

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time (37 working hours per week) and fixed-term position for 3 years. Starting date is October 1st 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 36,291 DKK/ approx. 4,872 Euro (April 2023-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
